The New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility (NHBSR) 2008
Cornerstone Award was presented to Monadnock Paper Mills, Inc. at
NHBSR's annual conference held in Bedford, New Hampshire. The annual
award is presented to an individual, a business or organization that
exemplifies the concepts of corporate social responsibility within
their organization and promotes the concepts of corporate social
responsibility to the greater business community within the State of
New Hampshire. NHBSR chose the name for the award with the belief that
corporate social responsibility should be a foundation of every
business--a basic building block, or cornerstone, of our economy and
our society.
Richard Verney, Chairman and CEO of Monadnock Paper
Mills, accepted the award on behalf of Monadnock from former New
Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen. Monadnock was selected as this
year's recipient from several finalists based on its ongoing
achievements in conservation and environmental stewardship. Finalists
for the cornerstone award included Tele Atlas, Climate Counts, The
Smuttynose Brewing Company and Regency Mortgage.
"Being
nominated as one of the five finalists for the prestigious Cornerstone
Award is an honor that all Monadnock employees can be proud of," said
Richard Verney. "Corporate social responsibility is the result of
efforts by all employees at Monadnock. It is our collective objective
to improve our environmental position each year."
In 2006
Monadnock generated 49% of its energy needs through its own low-impact
hydro-electric generation facilities and was the one of the first paper
mills to receive Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody
certification for its Astrolite PC 100® post-consumer recycled printing
papers. In 2006, Monadnock became an ISO 14001:2004-certified company
for its comprehensive Environmental Management System
In the
past two years alone Monadnock has been able to reduce operating
expenses by $500,000 through its green efforts. "One thing I can't
stress enough", said Richard Verney in accepting the award, "is that
conservation is part of being a good corporate citizen and is not only
the responsible thing to do, it also can save your company money". For
